EPN was established under the umbrella and with the support of ASTF. Its aim is to empower individuals committed to environmental sustainability and combating the challenges posed by emerging pollutants. Emerging pollutants represent a major challenge for future generations due to their impacts, which include threats to food security and public health.
The MENA are facing a growing, yet silent, environmental and public health crisis caused by the widespread presence of chemicals known as emerging environmental pollutants. These pollutants include perfluorinated and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), microplastics (MPs), and other substances in the environment. These persistent and toxic pollutants, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” have infiltrated water sources, agricultural lands, sensitive marine ecosystems, and even the air. Their widespread presence in the region represents a growing and significant threat to human health, biodiversity, economic stability, and the overall well-being of current and future generations.
EPN aims to inspire individuals with skills and passion in environmental sustainability and seeks to attract highly qualified individuals who have made significant contributions to the study of the environmental impact of emerging pollutants. EPN also aims to recognize experts with high competency in developing innovative technologies and strategies to mitigate the challenges associated with emerging pollutants, based on their knowledge and skills in solving complex environmental problems related to social, health, and other impacts. Additionally, EPN focuses on collaborating with various stakeholders concerned with climate change and emerging pollutants, including governments, communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and industries, all under the umbrella of the “One Health approach.”
EPN contribute to directing efforts to reduce the harmful impacts of emerging pollutants on the environment and public health by supporting experts in developing innovative and sustainable solutions. EPN play a leadership role through various initiatives that ensure the addressing of environmental and health challenges facing the MENA, especially concerning emerging pollutants such as PFAS, PPCPs, and MPs.
EPN offers a comprehensive range of services to its members, including technical training on the latest methods for analyzing and treating pollutants, empowering them with the knowledge and skills required to address these challenges. It will also develop awareness campaigns to promote sustainable practices.
Our journey towards a world free of emerging pollutants is not just a goal, but a collective effort that requires everyone’s participation. We invite you to be part of this transformative movement, where your role can make a difference through:
The Arab Network for Addressing Emerging Environmental Pollutants (EPN) is a pioneering initiative aimed at addressing the environmental challenges related to emerging pollutants in the Arab region through enhancing regional and international cooperation and providing sustainable solutions.
