The Board of Directors of the Arab Network for Emerging Environmental Pollutants (EPN) has officially approved the Professional Membership Framework in Emerging Environmental Pollutants, including the terms and conditions governing the application process. The decision represents a strategic step toward institutionalizing professional engagement and strengthening capacity in this rapidly evolving field across the Arab region.

Establishing a structured professional system

The newly approved framework responds to the growing need for a recognized Arab professional system that brings together researchers, practitioners, and experts working on emerging environmental pollutants. These include, but are not limited to, microplastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceutical residues, and contaminants affecting air, water, and soil.

According to the Board, the professional membership framework aims to:

• Standardize scientific and professional criteria for membership
• Promote continuous professional development and capacity building
• Enhance professional credibility and regional recognition of expertise
• Link membership to training programs, scientific activities, and regional and international initiatives

Clear terms and conditions for application

The approved terms and conditions outline a transparent and merit-based application process designed to ensure the quality and integrity of membership. Key requirements include:

• Relevant academic qualifications and/or professional experience
• Commitment to scientific integrity and professional ethics
• Active engagement in EPN activities and programs
• Alignment with EPN’s vision and mission to protect environmental and public health

The framework also introduces multiple membership categories, reflecting the diversity of academic, technical, and professional backgrounds within the field, including researchers, academics, practitioners, and postgraduate students.

Advancing regional leadership and impact

The Board emphasized that the adoption of the professional membership mechanism marks a milestone in EPN’s institutional development, reinforcing its role as a leading Arab platform that bridges science, policy, and practice.

By expanding and organizing its professional membership base, EPN aims to build a robust regional community of experts capable of addressing emerging environmental challenges, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and contributing to the protection of human health and environmental sustainability throughout the Arab world.
