First Unified Arab Technical Report Exposes PFAS Pollution Risks

September  2025

The Arab Network for Emerging Environmental Pollutants (EPN) released the first comprehensive Arab technical report on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of highly persistent industrial chemicals widely known as “forever chemicals.”

The report presents a systematic assessment of PFAS contamination across water bodies, soils, air, and biological samples in the Arab region. It documents widespread environmental presence while highlighting a critical shortage of regional research, with fewer than 15 peer-reviewed Arab studies identified, compared to hundreds published in Europe and North America.

One of the report’s most significant findings is the region’s dependence on overseas laboratories for PFAS analysis, due to limited availability of advanced analytical instruments such as LC-MS/MS and non-target screening platforms. This reliance, the report warns, undermines national monitoring efforts and delays regulatory action.

The publication underscores potential health risks associated with PFAS exposure, including endocrine disruption, immune system impairment, and developmental effects. It calls for urgent investment in laboratory infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and professional training. Policymakers and environmental agencies are expected to use the report as a baseline reference for future PFAS management strategies.
