SRO V Overview:

  • The 5th Congress of “Scientific Research Outlook in the Arab World: Scientific Innovation and Sustained Development” is comprised of : Specialized Conferences: These are 16 satellite conferences that includes 50 invited sessions, 20 workshops/tutorials, and over 1000 scientific papers/ posters. Such conferences will address specific scientific themes, from one up to three days duration. They will be held in two periods: 25th–28th and 28th–30th of October 2008. 
  • The Satellite Conferences will have keynote sessions, workshops (invited speakers), and scientific papers presented orally or in posters.

A main scientific day on 28/10/2008: The participants will have issues of common concerns. This day will be such as a festival for all scientific and technological specializations. The activities include the opening ceremony of the conference, presenting awards and launching initiatives to support the Arab Scientific Performance. It will also highlight the programs and activities of the Arab Science and Technology Foundation.

SRO V Objectives:

The congress aims to:

  • Enhancing the role of scientific research and technology development in addressing the knowledge gap in the Arab world. 
  • Reviewing and developing elements of success of Arab performance in science and technology, while linking this performance to various sectors that contribute to the sustained development of the Arab countries. 
  • Introducing new trends of co-operation, pan-Arab and Arab-international, in scientific research and technology development, technology ownership and investing in technology throughout the Arab world. Also, presenting samples of success stories that led to socio-economic progress. 
  • Assessing the priorities of research and development in the Arab world, and identifying feasible projects that benefit from the features available in each country in the Arab world.

Int’l Companies: Corporate Responsibility for the Arab Region  

Corporate social responsibility encompasses not only how companies make profits but what companies do with their profits.  It goes beyond philanthropy and compliance and addresses how companies manage their economic, social, and environmental impacts.  In addition, companies are facing unprecedented demands to engage in public-private partnerships and are increasingly interested in demonstrating accountability not only to shareholders, but also to stakeholders such as employees, consumers, suppliers, local communities, policymakers, and society-at-large.

This panel is composed of senior corporate officials who will present their company’s perspective on social responsibility and announce new programs specifically developed to advance science, technology and engineering in the Arab region.
